November 2013: Root Beer Floats, Glenville Football, Science Experiments, and Fantastic Teachers

Greetings, Ginn Academy supporters! Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas are quickly approaching, and we have a lot to celebrate and to be thankful for. For one, another birthday for Ted Ginn, Sr. We celebrated in style with root beer floats for everyone and a pep rally for the Glenville football team's first playoff game. Even the GHS cheerleaders took the time to join us with a special cheer just for Coach G. Very sweet!

At the pep rally, the Senate League all stars were named and Coach Ginn was named coach of the year. The team went on to beat Bedford HS that evening. More football information is in a separate post this month. There's just so much going on that it deserves its own spotlight.

Art teacher, Judy Rickel, media specialist Adrienne Khan, and our students are working hard to be ready for our first Empty Bowls event. On Thursday, 12/12/13, from 11:00AM - 2:00PM we invite you to join us to choose a handmade bowl which we will fill with soup for a suggested donation of $10. Proceeds will benefit the Cleveland Foodbank.

Soups will be provided by our very generous neighbors, the Grovewood Tavern and Bistro 185, along with some kind volunteer chefs from our staff. Spoons and linens provided by Thriftique, run by the National Council of Jewish Women.

Report cards for the first quarter came out a couple of weeks ago and there were swarms of proud young men who wanted to show theirs off. Lots of honor roll students! Congratulations, boys!!

The freshman honors group
For the first time, Ginn Academy has an honors program! We're very excited about what this means for our students and are proud to be advancing our curriculum. The above group of Freshmen (there are 26 total) will proceed through their honors classes and into AP classes starting next year.

While the Freshmen are just getting started, the seniors are thinking ahead a few months to graduation. They recently had their senior photos taken and enjoyed trying on the coveted caps and gowns for the first time.

Continually improving in every conceivable area, Ginn Academy is now recycling. The combined efforts of our HealthCorps coordinator, Jasmyne Jackson, teacher, Kim Galippo, and Asst. to the Director, Hazel Parker, are making a big difference in the amount of waste that we keep out of landfills. Our students volunteer to collect from each classroom and put it out for the recycling company.

A freshman physical science class recently enjoyed one of Mr. Podpeskar's activities experimenting with waves.

Some photos from around the school:

I recently had to erase this board to use it for something else, but took some photos so that this class's Halloween stories wouldn't be lost forever

We welcome Mr. Donald Van Drei, a social studies teacher who has wanted, for years, to work at Ginn Academy. When a spot opened, he interviewed and got it and brings such enthusiasm and energy to school with him each day. Thanks for sharing your passion for teaching with us, Mr. Van Drei!

We'll have another update before the winter break begins and more football news and photos. Please go to Byers Field this Friday, 11/29/13 @ 7:30 to root for Glenville as they play Medina Highland HS in the Ohio state semi-final game. And cheer your hearts out for them! Let them know you're there!

Dates to remember this month:

12/12/13 HealthCorps Health Fair 9:45 - 11:45
12/12/13 Empty Bowls fundraiser for Cleveland Foodbank 11:00 - 2:00

As always, we send our kindest regards. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
